Sports Radar Gun

Sports Radar Gun

Designed for Performance
To get correct speed gun readings most radar guns will need to be placed in the line of travel of the object to be clocked.

What is Radar?
Radar is an acronym for RAdio Detection and Ranging and defines an electronic instrument that utilizes electromagnetic radio waves to detect and locate moving of fixed objects. Based upon the Doppler Principle, a baseball radar gun, like all radar guns, transmits a continuous signal of electromagnetic waves at a constant frequency to make precise speed measurements.

When this signal strikes a moving target, the signal reflected back will be of a slightly different frequency which sensitive receivers built inside a radar gun can pick up and compute into MPH.

The Two most popular frequencies used for radar are K Band and Ka Band.

  • K Band is at 24.150 GHz
  • Ka Band is at 33.4-36.0 GHz
  • Ka Band is at 33.4-36.0 GHz

What works for you?
The three key elements in a sports radar gun are:

  1. Accuracy - The precision of the reading without error. Every radar gun has an accuracy variable. The most accurate being +/-0.1 MPH to +/- 1.0 MPH.
  2. Range - The distance one clocks a target from. Each radar product has a different range based on the technology built within the radar gun. The least amount of range can be up to 50 ft with the best being over 1 mile away. For Example - You can clock a hockey slap shot at close range, a baseball pitch from center field bleachers, or a race car over a mile away.
  3. Target Acquisition Time - How fast the radar gun reads the object being clocked and processes it to the read out on the gun. Target acquisition times range from 0.046 seconds to 0.01 seconds.
